The first time we stepped through the gates of Colle Santa Mustiola Winery<\/a>, words gave way to silence. It is not every day that a vineyard leaves you spellbound, yet that short visit seemed destined to change more than one perspective.<\/p>\n\n

Do you know those borderlands that hide secrets and treasures? The region between Umbria and Tuscany<\/a> is just like that: within a small area the scenery changes so much that even a short journey can feel long, gently leading you through different worlds.<\/p>\n\n

The Colle Santa Mustiola winery brings it all together. Its wine is itself one of the outstanding products of the region we share, but in the triangle between Lake Trasimeno, Lake Chiusi and Lake Montepulciano, the soil gives the vines something extra. These natural features are a legacy of a distant age when the sea still dominated this area.<\/p>\n\n

Colle Santa Mustiola: wine that rests inside an Etruscan tomb<\/h2>\n\n

Those distant ages left visible traces and, over time, became intertwined with the history of the Cenni family. The family has devoted its life to wine since the last century. Over the past 30 years, Fabio has carried that story forward. Once a doctor, he set aside his white coat to care for the Sangiovese vines around the family home.<\/p>\n\n

And here the stories meet again. The Cenni family land held not only valuable vines, but also a real Etruscan tomb. Today it is a resting place for their all-natural Sangiovese. The tufa stone and the soil\u2019s humidity create ideal conditions for the long maturation that Colle Santa Mustiola wine undergoes before reaching the table.<\/p>\n\n

Colle Santa Mustiola: the wines<\/h2>\n\n

At the time of our visit, the winery produced just three wines: two reds and a ros\u00e9. The two reds, unlike the ros\u00e9, followed an ageing process lasting at least seven years. Vigna Flavia, made with five Sangiovese clones, spent at least 42 months in Slavonian oak barrels, then another two years ageing in the bottle before release.<\/p>\n\n

That process was taken further for the flagship wine, Poggio ai Chiari. Its 28 Sangiovese clones aged for 66 months in French and Slavonian oak barrels, followed by a further 24 months in the bottle.<\/p>\n\n

Careful selection and winemaking methods designed to respect the grapes and avoid transport stress make this wine a journey through flavour. Its warming alcohol does not overpower the palate: it lets you appreciate the varied bouquet of both wines.<\/p>\n\n

The Santa Mustiola reds pair beautifully with traditional Tuscan and Umbrian dishes made with meat or game. They are also wonderful wines to savour slowly by the fireplace. We know that from experience.<\/p>\n\n

We have already returned twice to Fabio and Monica\u2019s home. Every time, we leave with a new feeling that goes far beyond their excellent wine. Colle Santa Mustiola is their warm welcome, a gateway to Etruscan history, an almost subterranean geological journey and a tasting experience shaped by Sangiovese, the king of this golden triangle.<\/p>\n\n
